Smoke & Soot Damage Cleaning in Norcross, GA

Smoke doesn't stay in the room that burned. It ends up on bedroom ceilings, inside the ducts, and sometimes in a home that never caught fire because the fire was next door. We clean each surface with the method that suits it, so the soot comes off and the smell doesn't creep back in a month. You'll see the scope and estimate in writing before we start.

Smoke or soot damage? Get help from a team you can trust

If there was a fire, wait until the fire department says the building is safe to enter. Then leave the heat and AC off. A running system pulls soot into the return and blows it into every room on the duct line.

Call us when you're ready. We answer 24/7 from our Norcross office and clean homes and businesses across Gwinnett and metro Atlanta, including apartments and townhomes where the fire was in the unit next door.

Can we help with smoke damage in your home or business?

Yes. And the fire doesn't have to be big. Smoke travels on heat and air pressure, so a fire on one side of the house can leave black film on the other. We clean up after:

  • A small kitchen or grease fire that left a greasy film on cabinets and ceilings
  • Smoke from an adjoining apartment or townhome, where your unit never burned
  • A furnace puffback that sprayed soot out of the registers
  • Soot on walls and ceilings far from where the fire started, carried by the HVAC fan
  • A smell with no visible soot, usually protein residue from burned food

A word on cleaning it yourself. Wiping soot with a wet rag or a Magic Eraser smears it deeper, and flat paint holds onto it. People tell us "I already smeared it" all the time. If you have, don't keep going. It can usually still be fixed.

What our smoke damage cleaning includes

  1. Stop the spread. HVAC stays off, we run HEPA air scrubbers, and we keep foot traffic down so soot isn't ground into carpet.
  2. Identify the residue. Dry soot is powdery. Wet soot from plastics is sticky and smears. Protein residue from food is almost invisible but smells strong. Each one needs different chemistry.
  3. Test-clean a small area so we know the method works on your finish before doing the whole room.
  4. Dry removal first. HEPA vacuums and dry chemical sponges lift loose soot without water.
  5. Wet or chemical cleaning, top down, ceilings before walls before floors.
  6. Remove what can't be cleaned, like smoky attic insulation and carpet pad.
  7. HVAC cleaning, including the coils and blower, handled by a duct-cleaning partner we coordinate.
  8. Deodorize and seal stained or smoky surfaces with an odor-blocking primer. Our odor removal page covers that step.
  9. A final check, including a walk-through smell test with the house closed up.

Painting and repairs after cleaning are quoted separately, and our own crews do them. On bigger losses they're handled under a full fire damage restoration project.

Who cleans the structure, the contents and the electronics?

Three different jobs. The structure means the walls and ceilings, plus the framing and HVAC behind them. That's this page. Contents means clothing, furniture and the rest of your belongings, and they're usually packed out and cleaned off site. Our contents cleaning page explains how. Electronics go to a specialist.

Don't turn on smoky electronics to "see if they work." Soot conducts electricity, and residue from burned plastic corrodes contacts faster once there's power. We coordinate the pieces so you're not hiring three companies.

Be ready for some honest answers, too. Not every item can be saved, and we'll tell you which ones aren't worth the cleaning cost.

Smoke-darkened walls and ceiling

Who will arrive, and how we determine what needs attention

An IICRC-certified technician from our Norcross team will walk the property with you. They'll identify whether the residue is dry, wet or protein, and test-clean a small spot to pick the method. They'll look where soot hides: inside the return duct, above light fixtures, in the attic insulation and behind outlet covers on shared walls.

You'll get photos and notes for each room, so you can see what we saw before you approve anything.

Clear information about pricing, documentation and next steps

The price depends on the residue type, how many rooms are affected, whether the HVAC needs cleaning and what has to be removed. Protein residue in a few rooms is a different job from wet soot through a whole house. You get a written, room-by-room scope that lists each step, and you approve it before we start.

For the claim, we provide photos and residue notes with an itemized Xactimate estimate, the format adjusters use. We bill your insurer directly. If the smoke came from a neighbor's fire, the claim usually goes on your own policy, though that depends on your coverage. We can't promise what it pays. If insurance pays less than the invoice, you're responsible for the difference. That's why documentation matters, and why it helps to use a company that works claims with every major carrier, like we do.

Room cleaned down after smoke damage

Questions people ask us

Can I clean the soot off my walls myself?

A little light, dry soot, maybe. Vacuum it with a HEPA vacuum and use a dry chemical sponge before anything wet touches it. Water and household cleaners turn soot into a smear, and flat paint soaks it up for good. If you've already tried a Magic Eraser and made a gray streak, put the sponge down. Call us.

Can I just paint over the smoke stains?

Not until the soot is cleaned off. Paint over soot and the stain and smell bleed back through. After cleaning, stained areas get an odor-blocking primer, usually shellac or oil-based, because a standard latex primer won't hold it back.

Is smoke residue dangerous to live with?

Soot can carry harmful compounds, especially when plastics or vinyl burned, and older homes may have asbestos materials. Kids, older adults and anyone with asthma are more sensitive. We'd suggest staying elsewhere until the living areas are cleaned.

It smells like smoke but I can't see any soot. Is there damage?

Probably. Burned food leaves a protein residue that's close to invisible and smells strong. A tape lift or swab can show what's on the surface, which also helps if your insurer says there's no damage. We arrange an independent testing company for that, since we never test our own jobs.

Will smoke ruin my TV and computer?

It can, but don't decide yet. Burned plastics release chlorides that turn acidic with humidity and corrode metal contacts, and powering a device on can speed that up. Leave electronics unplugged until a specialist has cleaned and checked them.

Call about smoke damage today

Tell us where the smoke came from, which rooms smell or show soot, and whether the heat or AC has been running since. A few photos of the ceilings help. We'll confirm we can help, give you an arrival window, and explain what the technician will check first.
