A sewage backup is not like ordinary water damage. You're worried about the smell, your kids and pets, and what has to be thrown away. We contain the area and remove what can't be saved. Sewage backup? Get help from a team you can trust

Keep children, pets and anyone vulnerable out of the area. Stop using every drain and toilet in the house. Each flush can push more sewage up. And don't pick up soaked towels or rugs with bare hands.

Then call us. We answer 24/7 from our Norcross office and work across Gwinnett and metro Atlanta. If you haven't called a plumber yet, call one too. The line has to be cleared before we can finish the cleanup.

Sewage backup through a finished basement

Sewage backed up into the basement of an Atlanta home, starting in a small laundry closet and spreading into the finished rooms around it.

Areas affected

  • Basement laundry room and laundry closets
  • Basement bathroom, linen closet and hallway
  • A basement bedroom and bedroom closet
  • The garage

What we did

  1. Took moisture readings in each room to map how far the water went
  2. Set up containment and suited up in Tyvek suits and respirators
  3. Cut out the contaminated drywall and paneling and bagged the debris for disposal
  4. HEPA vacuumed the wall cavities and floors, with HEPA air scrubbers running
  5. Applied antimicrobial to the framing and slab
  6. Dried the basement with air movers and dehumidifiers

Result

The basement was cleaned, treated and dried, with photos logged at every stage for the claim.

Can we help with the sewage damage in your home?

Yes. Most backups we see start at the lowest fixture in the house. Calls usually sound like this:

  • "The toilet or tub backed up and it's all over the bathroom floor."
  • "Sewage came up through the floor drain in our finished basement."
  • "It ran under the baseboard into the bedroom next door."
  • "It backed up during that heavy rain last night."
  • "The towels, rugs and carpet are soaked with dirty water."

Crawl spaces get backups too, often from a cracked line under the house. We handle those as well.

What our sewage cleanup service includes

  1. Containment. We seal off the area with plastic and control the air so the work doesn't carry contamination into clean rooms.
  2. Mapping. We check how far the water reached, including under baseboards, into wall cavities and across thresholds.
  3. Removal. Porous materials that sewage touched, like carpet, pad, insulation and the lower part of drywall, are bagged and taken out.
  4. Cleaning and disinfection. Hard surfaces are scrubbed with detergent first, then treated with an EPA-registered disinfectant, wiped and sprayed the way its label directs. We also have fogging and electrostatic equipment for spaces that need it.
  5. Drying. Dehumidifiers and air movers run until readings reach a dry standard.
  6. Completion check. We confirm the area is clean, dry and free of odor before you use it again.

This is not carpet cleaning, even when the water looked clear. Carpet and pad soaked by sewage can't be made safe by shampooing. Blunt, but important. If we find something beyond sewage that needs biohazard cleaning, we coordinate it through a partner company. Rebuilding walls and floors afterward is a separate scope, covered on our reconstruction page.

Who handles the sewer line, and who handles the cleanup?

A plumber clears and repairs the line. We handle the contaminated rooms. In Gwinnett, the county's policy is that the homeowner owns and maintains the sewer lateral from the house out to the county connection in the right-of-way. The county says most reported backups start in that private section, often from roots at the connection. If you think the county main is the problem, Gwinnett's water department has a 24-hour line, 678.376.7000.

Be careful with promises that the county will reimburse you. Specific conditions apply, and most backups trace to the private side. We'll coordinate with your plumber on timing and keep notes and photos of what we find. That helps if responsibility is disputed later.

Who will arrive, and how we determine what needs attention

An IICRC-certified technician from our Norcross team will walk the area in protective gear. They'll check every room the water could have reached, not only the one where it came up. Sewage moves under baseboards and flooring without leaving an obvious line.

Hard, sealed surfaces like tile, concrete and metal can usually be cleaned and disinfected. Porous ones usually can't. If something is in between, like solid wood furniture, we'll tell you what we think and why. You get photos and notes of every room we checked.

Clear information about pricing, documentation and next steps

Price depends on how far it spread, what has to be removed, whether contents are involved and how long drying takes. A toilet overflow on bathroom tile and a basement floor drain that ran overnight into carpet are very different jobs.

Before work starts, you'll get a written scope listing what's being removed, what's being cleaned and how equipment is billed. You approve it first. We document everything with photos, notes and an itemized Xactimate estimate, the format adjusters use, and we bill your insurer directly.

Many standard policies exclude sewer and drain backup unless you added an endorsement. Some people have one and don't know it. Even policies that cover backup usually cap what they'll pay for it, so check that limit early. We can't promise or rule out coverage. If insurance pays less than the invoice, you're responsible for the difference. That's why documentation matters, and why it helps to use a company that works claims with every major carrier, like we do.

Questions people ask us

Is a sewage backup covered by homeowners insurance?

Often not on a standard policy. Most exclude water that backs up through sewers or drains unless you added a water or sewer backup endorsement, and that endorsement usually has its own limit. Check your declarations page or ask your agent. We can't promise coverage either way.

Can I clean up sewage myself?

A small spill on tile, with gloves and boots on, is something some people handle. Anything porous that sewage touched, like carpet, pad or drywall, has to be thrown out, not washed. If it spread under baseboards or into a finished basement, call a professional.

Is it safe to stay in the house?

Usually, as long as the affected area is closed off and nobody walks through it. Keep children, pets and anyone with a weak immune system away until cleanup is done. If the only bathroom is the affected one, plan to stay elsewhere for a few days.

The toilet water looked clear. Is it still sewage?

Yes, if it came back up from the drain line. Water that backflows from beyond the toilet trap is treated as contaminated no matter how it looks. A clean tank overflow is different, so tell us which it was.

Why does it still smell after someone cleaned it?

Usually because contaminated material was left behind, often carpet pad, the bottom of the drywall or the cavity behind the baseboard. Sprays cover smell for a day or two. The smell goes away when the source material is removed and the area is cleaned, disinfected and dried.

How do I keep it from happening again?

Ask your plumber about a backwater valve and a camera inspection of your lateral. Don't flush wipes or pour grease down drains, and keep deep-rooted trees away from the sewer line.

Call about sewage cleanup today

Tell us what backed up, where it came up, whether it's still happening and whether a plumber has been called. A photo of the floor helps us bring the right gear. We'll confirm we can help, give you an arrival window and explain what happens when we get there.
